LIMA BEAN & LINDA: FROM AMERICAN HORROR STORY TO AMERICAN DREAM If ever you needed to understand the importance of livestock guardian dog rescue groups (us) and adopters (you), let the story of Lima Bean and Linda speak to your hearts. Lima (male) and Linda (female) are 5-6-month-old Great Pyrenees mixes recently rescued from a horrific situation at an Idaho ranch. They, along with a several other livestock guardian dogs, lived in abject squalor at the hands of a neglectful and sadistic rancher. The dogs led a feral life, deprived of shelter, care, affection, and proper nutrition. They subsisted on buckets of rotting carp, dead squirrels, and whatever free roadkill the rancher came upon and tossed their way. The bones and rotting carcasses of dead dogs (some, mere puppies) and livestock littered the fields. Lima’s and Linda’s own mother was shot to death by the rancher shortly before we, and some other local rescue groups, intervened and retrieved the survivors. Make no mistake…Lima and Linda are indeed survivors. They are also now available for adoption to a good forever home. Despite such tragic beginnings, Lima and Linda are evolving beautifully from the silent, terrified puppies that first arrived in our care. Both are a bit shy and understandably unsure with new surroundings, but they warm up quickly. They’ve made great strides learning to trust humans, and now allow us to touch, stroke, and brush them. Lima is proving himself a leader amongst the puppies and a bit of a goofy boy. He loves chasing after balls (although he’s not so great at giving them back). He is always ready and willing to play with the other puppies, and his tail curls high and proudly when he feels happy. We believe he will be quite a big boy when fully grown. Linda is smaller, but more socially outgoing. Both are sweet and gentle with their foster mom and her 5-year-old granddaughter. Neither has shown signs of aggression toward people or other animals. Lima and Linda will need loving adopters who will provide the patient, one-on-one attention they need to learn potty training, leash training, and increased comfort with (and trust in) humans. We feel fortunate to have rescued these beautiful creatures early enough that they will develop into healthy, happy, well-adjusted family pets. Lima and Linda would do best in homes that have dog experience and older, respectful children. They will also need medium to large resident dog to help mentor them and guide them in building confidence. If you are interested in adopting either Lima or Linda, please go to www.greatpyrsandpaws.org and submit an Adopter Application. They are currently being fostered in Oregon.
